“Intro to Strategy” and “Intro to Skipping” are two new classes to help curlers grow and gain confidence on the ice. “Intro to Strategy” focuses on why to pick a shot, and “Intro to Skipping” talks about how to play it. These classes are designed to work together. It may be helpful - but is not necessary - to take Strategy first.
Intro to Strategy with Gabrielle Coleman (Note: this is an online virtual-only clinic)
This goal of this class is to give students a basic introduction to curling strategy concepts, including:
Three types of strategy - Game Plan, End Plan, Tactics
How to choose an End Plan
How to use your End Plan to choose Tactics
When to guard vs draw vs hit?
What does it mean to be “conservative” or “aggressive”?
How to look for shots with good Plan Bs and pro-side errors.
We will also play (online) through a couple ends together to practice picking shots and making the most of misses.
Duration: 2 hours max (may be shorter depending on partipation and questions)
(This course is basically a short version of the book “Introduction to Curling Strategy” by Gabrielle Coleman. If you have questions about the new Free Guard Zone and No-Tick rules, let us know in advance and we will add a short section about that before the class starts. We don’t use the No-Tick rule in SFBACC leagues at the moment, but some competitions do.)
